Exploring smart cities: Insights from deputy mayor of Kaohsiung

 Charles Lin, Deputy Mayor of Kaohsiung has been actively involved in promoting the development of smart cities in Taiwan and has been recognized for his contributions to this field. One of the questions asked to Mr. Lin was which countries, aside from Taiwan, have made significant progress towards establishing smart cities. In response, Mr. Lin noted that many cities around the world are claiming to be working towards becoming smart cities. However, he emphasized that there are several components that need to be set up for a city to truly be considered smart. Mr. Lin pointed out that the first component is the political will of the local government. The local government must be committed to making their city a smart city. However, he noted that this cannot be achieved solely by the local government. They need the support of the national government to help provide the necessary resources and energy to make it happen. He cited Singapore and Malaysia as examples of smart nations that are doing well in this regard. In addition to these components, Mr. Lin highlighted the need for smart cities to have access to capital and technology. He noted that technology is evolving at a rapid pace, and cities must keep up with these changes and be open to learning and adapting. Lastly, Mr. Lin emphasized the importance of international cooperation and the need to establish protocols and guidelines for technology to be used across borders. Overall, Mr. Lin emphasized that while many cities around the world are claiming to be smart cities, there are only a few that are truly making progress in this area. He stressed the need for political will, support from the national government, regulations, testing and open government, access to capital and technology, and cooperation from international communities to make a city truly smart. With his experience in promoting smart cities in Taiwan, Mr. Lin's insights provide valuable guidance for any city looking to become a smart city.
