‘Amang’ traverses northeastern part of Camarines Sur; Signal No. 1 still up in 11 Luzon areas

Tropical depression Amang continued to move westward, while its center was in the northeastern part of Camarines Sur around 1 a.m., Wednesday, April 12, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

PAGASA said the center of Amang was over Presentacion, Camarines Sur as of 1 a.m. It made its initial landfall over Panganiban, Catanduanes on Tuesday evening, April 11.

The cyclone maintained its maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 60 kph, while moving westward at a speed of 20 kph.

Due to strong winds brought about by Amang, tropical cyclone wind signal number 1 remains hoisted over Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Ticao Island, Burias Island, eastern part of Laguna, Aurora, Quezon, and eastern part of Rizal.

“Areas under Wind Signal No. 1 may experience strong winds, strong breeze to near gale strength, associated with the tropical depression which may cause minimal to minor impacts to life and property,” PAGASA warned.

Heavy rains may also prevail over Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and the eastern portion of Quezon province until Wednesday evening.

PAGASA said Amang may continue to bring heavy rains over Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, the northern and southeastern parts of Quezon province, and the eastern portions of Rizal and Laguna until Friday evening, April 14.

“Under these conditions, isolated flash floods and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in localities that experienced considerable amounts of rainfall for the past several days,” the weather bureau pointed out.

Track and intensity forecast

PAGASA said Amang may move generally westward or west-northwestward in the next 12 hours, bringing its center over Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur before turning northwest toward the waters east of Quezon province, with the possibility of passing near or over the Polillo Islands.

In this scenario, a subsequent landfall over Aurora or mainland Quezon province may take place on Thursday, April 13, it added.

“Based on the forecast confidence cone and considering the weak nature of the depression, the possibility that the depression will continue tracking more westward—slightly south of the present track forecast—over the Bicol Peninsula and mainland Quezon is not ruled out,” PAGASA pointed out.

It said that Amang may weaken into a low pressure area on Thursday or earlier “due to the combined effects of land interaction, dry air intrusion, and increasing vertical wind shear.”
