PRO-1 pays homage to Filipino war veterans on Araw ng Kagitingan

CAMP FLORENDO, La Union – The Police Regional Office-1 paid tribute to Filipino war veterans during the commemoration of the 81st Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) and celebration of the 2023 Philippine Veterans Week in this camp on Monday, April 10. Retired 2nd Lt. Paulino A. Altarez, district president, 1st La Union Veterans Federation of the Philippines (VFP), City of San Fernando, La Union, was the guest of honor and speaker. Altarez said the sacrifices of the Filipino soldier in times of peace and war are remembered on Araw ng Kagitingan. “Our lawmakers were prompted to create a national observance and official holiday that serves as an avenue to commemorate the sacrifices and valor of our Filipino soldiers who fought against the Japanese during WWII. Ngayon ay sama-sama nating parangalan ang ating mga bayaning sundalo na lumaban at handang mamatay noong panahon ng World War. Atin pong kilalanin ang kanilang kabayanihan (Today, we join hands in remembering our soldiers who fought in the World War. Let us recognize their heroism),” said Altarez. Seventeen surviving members of the VFP chapter and their dependents from this province also joined the event. Police Brig. Gen. John C. Chua, PRO-1 director, also cited the Filipino war veterans for their sacrifice in World War II. Under Proclamation 466, Series of 1989, Philippine Veterans Week is celebrated yearly from April 5 to April 11 promote, preserve, and memorialize the principles, ideas, and deeds of the Filipino war veterans to enhance patriotism and love of country, especially among the youth. Executive Order 203, Series of 1987, provides for the commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan every April 9.
