The Netherland's Safety For Children and Their Rights Online (SCROL) and Cebu-based Bidlisiw Foundation, Inc. chose PLDT, Inc. and Smart Communications, Inc. as their exclusive telco partners to combat online child sexual exploitation.
"The United Nations has identified the Philippines as a global hotspot for the online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC) and as a technology company and an Internet Service Provider, we support advocacy groups through the services that we offer,” Marylou Gocotano, Head of Visayas Relations at PLDT and Smart Stakeholder Management Group stated Monday, April 10.
SCROL, which had been making strides in Nepal, Kenya, and Cambodia, will soon debut in the Philippines with Cebu as the initial launch site.
The program will be implemented in Naga City and in the municipalities of Minglanilla, Bantayan, and Sta. Fe.
SCROL is under Terre des Hommes Netherlands in Asia, an organization that provides assistance to children, while Bislisiw Foundation is a Philippine social development agency that aids urban poor families.
“OSAEC has been proliferating nowadays. Our prevention work involves ISPs, telecommunication companies, money transfer agencies, and technology companies, among others," says Pamela Uy, Bidlisiw Foundation, Inc. Deputy Executive Director.
Working with PLDT and Smart is one step closer to finding solutions to end the online sexual exploitation of children and the youth, she sttessed. In January of this year, PLDT and Smart's Cyber Security Operations Group (CSOG) prevented more than 200,000 attempts to access OSAEC materials through their pioneering Child Protection Platform.
