No Pinoy semis clash as Abarrientos, Ulsan fall to Goyang in KBL do-or-die

There will be no dream semifinals clash between Filipino imports RJ Abarrientos and Rhenz Abando. Abarrientos suffered a dismal outing as Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus fell at the hands of the Goyang Carrot Jumpers, 77-71, in the do-or-die Game Five of their quarterfinals series in the Korean Basketball League on Monday, April 10, at the Ulsan Dongcheon Gymnasium. The former Far Eastern University standout only had five points in a 2-of-6 shooting clip in almost 27 minutes of play.

Abando’s Anyang KGC, which advanced straight to the semifinals after a top seed finish in the regular season, had to wait a little longer as Goyang dragged Ulsan into a winner-take-all Game Five and eventually secure the semis spot. It would have been a much-awaited duel between the UAAP and NCAA standouts in the pro scene in an overseas setting. After drawing first blood and even leading 2-1 in the series, the Mobis Phoebus couldn’t completely cut the Carrot Jumpers out of the picture. Interestingly, Ulsan holds the most title in the league with seven, and it hasn’t been back in the finals since 2019. The Mobis Phoebus struggled to recover from their 11-point deficit in the first half and continued to trail throughout the third frame. In the final frame, Ulsan saw some semblance of life in its semis bid and managed to take the lead, 61-58, with 6:47 to go in the contest. But it wouldn’t take long for Goyang to put things back in order as Choi Hyun-min and Dedric Lawson fired back-to-back triples, 64-61. With less than a minute to go, 74-71, the Carrot Jumpers held on to the win the until the final buzzer. The duo of American import Lawson and local star Lee Jung-hyun paved the way for Goyang after finishing with 30 and 24 points, respectively. Gage Prim, meanwhile, paced Ulsan with 27 points, while Woo-seok and Seo Myeong-jin added 15 and 14 points, respectively, in the losing effort.
