Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Koshikawa Kazuhiko said this as he graced the celebration of the 81st anniversary of the Araw ng Kagitingan in Bataan on Monday, April 10. In his remarks, Koshikawa rued the actions of Japan during World War II, particularly in Bataan. "I'd like to express my heartfelt condolences to the victims of the fierce battles that took place here during the Second World War," he said. "We, the Japanese people, feel deep remorse for our country's actions before and during the Second World War," he added. Wishing lasting peace for the common good while trusting in the face and justice of peace-loving people, the Japanese diplomat said they are determined to uphold the rules-based global order. He added that this was the "best tribute" they could offer to those who died during the war in Bataan. "Today, in this sacred site, we gather and act as close friends and like-minded partners in preserving peace and prosperity in this region for the future generation," Koshikawa said. "I believe that this is the best tribute we can offer to the souls of those who passed away in the fighting that took place here 81 years ago," he added.

'The closest of friends'

Koshikawa thanked the Philippines for forgiving Japan despite the horrors of World War II. "Eight decades after the war, Japan and the Philippines have become the closest of friends. We are deeply grateful for the forgiveness and graciousness of Filipinos, as well as the tireless efforts of both our predecessors," he said. With this, the Japanese envoy assured Filipinos that Japan would continue to stand by the Philippines. "Echoing the word of His Excellency President Marcos Jr., saying Japan is the most reliable partner in times of crisis and prosperity, we will surely be working hard to live up to the trust of the President," Koshikawa said. "It is our sincere hope that through our concerted effort, we will be able to elevate our relation to greater heights," he added.

Strategic Partnership

Meanwhile, Koshikawa noted how the relationship between the Philippines and Japan continues to deepen as the countries mark the 12th anniversary of establishing the Japan-Philippines strategic partnership this year. In February, President Marcos made his official visit to Japan, where he and Prime Minster Kishida Fumio reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas, including people-to-people exchange, economy, [security, and defense](https://mb.com.ph/2023/02/09/ph-japan-to-boost-defense-security-ties/). Both leaders also pledged that Japan and the Philippines, together with the United States and other like-minded countries, are partners in maintaining a peaceful and stable world. "Amid the increasingly severe international security environment, we seek to prevent a repeat of the tragedy of war for the sake of the present and future generations," Koshikawa said. Following his visit to Tokyo, Marcos said [the Philippines would review a "tripartite agreement" with two of its closest allies](https://mb.com.ph/2023/02/12/marcos-admin-to-review-tripartite-agreement-with-long-time-allies-us-japan/), the United States and Japan, saying it is part of Manila's process of strengthening its alliances with its long-time partners amid "dangerous" situations.
