Bishop Victor Bendico will be formally installed as the new archbishop of Capiz on May 3.
The Church leader, who is currently serving as the bishop of the Diocese of Baguio, will become the fourth archbishop of his home archdiocese, which has been “sede vacante” or without a bishop for nearly two years, said the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.
Monsignor Cyril Villareal served as apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Capiz while awaiting the replacement of Jose Cardinal Advincula, who was appointed archbishop of the Archdiocese of Manila in March 2021.
The archbishop-elect was named to the post by Pope Francis on March 3.
Born in Roxas City in 1960, Bendico was ordained priest for the Capiz archdiocese on April 14, 1984.
The 63-year-old Church leader holds a doctorate degree in Sacred Liturgy from the Pontifical Institute of St. Anselm in Rome, Italy.
The Holy Father appointed him bishop of Baguio in Oct. 2016. He was ordained to the episcopate on Jan. 10, 2017. Aside from serving as Baguio bishop, he also served as apostolic administrator of the Diocese of San Fernando in La Union from 2017 to 2018.
The in-coming archbishop of Capiz is currently the chairman of the CBCP - Episcopal Commission on Liturgy.
