Far Eastern University overcame Ateneo and hacked out a 25-12, 15-25, 19-25, 25-15, 18-16 win in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday, March 8, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Lady Tamaraws, who are reeling from their tight loss to the Adamson Lady Falcons last March 4, managed to snap their back-to-back losses and improved 2-2 in the standings.
It was also the first time that FEU managed to beat Ateneo since May 4, 2019 in their Season 81 Final Four duel.
Jovelyn Fernandez delivered the goods for FEU with 18 points off 15 attacks, two aces and a block, while Alyzza Devosora and Mitzi Panangin added 13 and 11, respectively.
Marga Encarnacion, for her part, took care of the Lady Tamaraws' floor defense with 35 excellent digs and 12 receptions.
The Lady Tamaraws surged to an early 4-1 lead but would find themselves in the first deadlock of the final set at 5-all.
FEU then tried to pull away with an 11-9 advantage but Ateneo kept knocking at their door following Vanie Gandler’s crosscourt kill to keep it tight in their third deadlock of the set.
From then on, the Lady Tamaraws would hold on and ultimately finish the job courtesy Gerzel Petallo’s block on Alexis Miner to eclipse their lone win finish from last season.
"Hopefully, hindi ito 'yong last, no. 'Yong thoughts ko we have to improve more, so thankful ako sa mga freshmen ko like Mitzi, Marga, Gerzel and Aly. Nag-step up sila para sa team. Hindi ko ine-expect pero I'm very proud kung ano 'yong pinakita ng freshmen ko, talagang sila 'yong bumuhat sa mga seniors. Sana maging inspiration 'yong ginawa ng lahat, total team effort is, especially sa coaches side, sa management side, especially sa kanila," said FEU head coach Tina Salak.
Ateneo, which slid to 1-3 in the standings, was paced by Faith Nisperos with 21 points, while Miner had 17. Lyann De Guzman and Gandler chipped in 16 and 13 markers, respectively, in the losing effort.
