Smooth traffic observed in Camanava roads amid transport strike - NPD director
Northern Police District Director Brig. Gen. Ponce Rogelio Penones Jr. said smooth traffic was observed in major roads in the cities of Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela (Camanava) despite the start of the week-long transport strike by public utility vehicles (PUV) drivers on Monday, March. 6.
Penones told Manila Bulletin that there were around 30 persons gathered along Monumento in Caloocan City from Piston and Anakbayan who are against the phase out of traditional jeepneys under the PUV modernization program. The traffic in the area was not affected.
He said there were no reports of stranded passengers on the roads in the city as of 11:15 a.m., as the local governments and city police forces have dispatched vehicles to provide free rides to the public.
Camanava mayors had earlier ordered the deployment of vehicles for “LIbreng Sakay,” the implementation of online classes for students; increased police visibilty; and monitoring and assistance by concerned city departments, to ease the effects of the transport strike.
Col. Ruben Lacuesta, Caloocan City Police Station (CCPS) chief, said there were around 168 city police personnel deployed in the city , especially in areas like terminals where people gather, to ensure the safety of the commuters and the PUV drivers who did not participate the transport strike.
He said that they have pinpointed and are monitoring different areas in the city for stranded passengers while police patrol cars were also utilized to provide free rides.
Residents, commuters, and drivers in Caloocan City can coordinate with the city police and the city government if they have any concerns during the strike, Lacuesta said.
Aside from the “Libreng Sakay” vehicles, the city government of Valenzuela also deployed additional e-tricycles to help ferry stranded passengers.
In Quezon City, the local government also deployed additional QCity buses to Cubao, Commonwealth Avenue, Welcome Rotonda, Novaliches Bayan, East Avenue, Fairview, and Quezon City Memorial Circle. Residents can check the routes of the buses on the city’s Facebook page.
It also deployed service vehiclesto Barangays Bungad, Sikatuna, Quirino 2A, and Paltok, where stranded passengers were seen.
The Quezon City Police District said that 60 members of human rights and transport groups gathered along Quirino Highway in Barangay Nova Proper, Novaliches, Quezon City calling on the national government to abolish the jeepney phaseout and to increase the salary of workers.
Several transport groups carried out the national week-long transport strike to protest against the national PUV Modernization that requires the phaseout of traditional jeepneys which will be replaced by environment-friendly vehicles.
