BUTUAN CITY – A magnitude-5.3 earthquake rocked Davao de Oro before dawn on Monday, March 6, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs said the epicenter of the earthquake recorded at 4:43 a.m. was 22 kilometers southeast of New Bataan, Davao de Oro and had a shallow depth of two kilometers, Phivolcs said.
It was felt at Intensity IV in New Bataan and Maco and Mawab in Davao de Oro; Intensity III in Nabunturan and Intensity II in Laak, Davao de Oro, and Intensity I in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.
Phivolcs expects aftershocks and damage from the earthquake.
At least 10 aftershocks have been recorded, the strongest of which was magnitude three at 6:17 a.m. Its epicenter was 10 kilometers southeast of New Bataan with a shallow depth of one kilometer.
The earthquake was tectonic in origin, caused by the movement of an active fault in the area.
No damage or injury was reported by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and Davao de Oro Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) as of posting time.
