CEBU CITY – A regional special investigation task group was created to solve the killing of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo on Saturday morning, March 4.

The Police Regional Office-Central Visayas (PRO-7) said joint security forces are pursuing at least 10 perpetrators.
Initial investigation showed that the governor was attending to some 4Ps beneficiaries inside his home in Barangay Pamplona, Negros Oriental when at least six men arrived. The perpetrators wore “pixelized uniform” and were carrying long firearms, the PRO-7 said.
Shortly after entering the gated compound, the perpetrators opened fire, hitting the governor and nine other individuals. The gunmen fled on board two sports utility vehicles (SUV).
Three getaway vehicles, a Mitsubishi Pajero with license plates NQZ-735, a green Isuzu pickup truck with license plates GRY-162, and a black Mitsubishi Montero with license plates YAP-163, were found abandoned in Barangay Kansumalig, Bayawan City, Negros Oriental.
“More or less, 10 suspects were seen fleeing from the scene and are now being pursued by joint security forces,” the PRO-7 said.
Degamo’s family has called on the national government for a thorough investigation and bring perpetrators to justice.
"Ang among panawagan sa (Our call for the) national government: Gov. Degamo did not deserve that kind of death. He was serving his constituents on a Saturday along with his department heads," Degamo’s wife and Pamplona Mayor Janice Degamo said in Facebook Live around 1 p.m. on Saturday.
"Ang mga mapanghinaot isip kabanay ni Gov. Roel nga tinud-on gyud unta sa national government ang pagpangita, pagpaningil sa hustisya sa akong bana (Our hopes as family of Gov. Roel is that the national government will be sincere in finding the perpetrators and bring justice to my husband)," Mayor Degamo added.
She said her husband died at the hospital at 11:41 a.m. or two hours after the attack.
Mayor Degamo called on people who may have information on the attack to help them in their quest for justice.
She described her husband as a peaceful leader who will stand up against wrongdoings. "Sa among panglantaw, si Gov. Roel ra gyud ang nagpabiling malinaw ng leader nga andam makig tigi sa mga dautan ug mga pamaagi nga dili nato gusto (In our view, Gov. Roel was the remaining peaceful leader but was ready to fight against wrongdoings).”
