The Manila Electric Company (Meralco), through its transport solutions unit, will be expanding its electric vehicle business into a commercial scale operation.
This developed following the incorporation of its new subsidiary Movem Electric Inc., which intends to offer more extensive supply chain solutions in the flourishing electric vehicle (EV) industry in the country.
According to Meralco First Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer Raymond B. Ravelo, the company will not just venture into EV charging facilities, but it will also delve into deployment of EVs as well as other array of solutions to help stimulate the growth of electric mobility in the Philippines.
“The incorporation of Movem Electric is in line with Meralco's plans to be a major player in the growing electric vehicle industry,” the company stressed.
It emphasized that “the new subsidiary will focus on the development and deployment of different electric transport solutions.”
Movem, as noted by Meralco, will perform a different function to that of eSakay, which has been the utility firm’s initial business plunge into EV - primarily its preliminary venture into electric jeepneys and the electrification of fleets for its business centers and unit-offices.
eSakay, in particular, currently operates a fleet of electric jeepneys plying the Makati-Mandaluyong route, hence, it will be having its focus on the public transportation space.
Under Movem, Ravelo indicated that the company will be able to extend “more products and services” to targeted clients and customers in the country’s transport sector.
As specified by Meralco, their company is “committed to enable and support the country’s transition towards a cleaner and a more sustainable transport system.”
Part of the solution being advanced by Meralco is the use of renewable energy in the charging facilities for the EV fleets that they will be deploying, so the target of decarbonization can be truly achieved in its rollout of electric vehicle solutions.
