Parañaque Mayor Olivarez alerts residents on increasing dengue cases

Parañaque Mayor Eric Olivarez issued a memorandum on March 24 alerting the residents on the alarming increase of dengue cases in the city. The mayor issued the memorandum after 10 dengue cases were reported in the city from March 5 to18. Olivarez said the city has already reached the alert threshold following the death of a resident due to dengue in Barangay Moonwalk. He said clusters of dengue cases have been reported in seven villages in District II. These villages are Barangays San Antonio, Don Bosco, Merville, Sun Valley, Merville, Marcelo Green, and BF Homes. The mayor recalled the dengue outbreak that occurred in the city in 2019, wherein there were a total of 1,700 reported cases from Jan. 1 to Sept. 14. In his memorandum addressed to the Punong Barangay and Council, Department of Education (DepEd)- School Division Office of Parañaque, City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), Public Information Office and the  Parañaque Homeowners Association, Olivarez called for a united action in combating dengue cases by intensifying preventive and control measures. He cited some of the measures to prevent and control dengue cases including the implementation of the 4 o’ clock habit; the 4S+IS Kontra Dengue if there is an impending outbreak and the Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue (ABKD). The 4S+IS method stands for search and destroy mosquito breeding places, self protective measures like wearing of long sleeves and use of insect repellent, seek early consultation on the first sign and symptoms of the disease, and say yes to fogging. The mayor added that interventions -- such as health education and advocacy lectures on dengue, clean-up drive and source reduction in mosquito-prone areas including creeks and canals, and larviciding, misting and fogging -- must be implemented within communities in schools to control the mosquito population. Olivarez is also asking for the help and full cooperation of the residents to prevent the increase of cases and escalation to a full-blown dengue outbreak in the city.
