ILOILO CITY – The number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in Western Visayas has surpassed the 5,000-leve, according to the Department of Health in Region (DOH 6).
This was disclosed by DOH-6 Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Jessie Glen Alonasbe after 157 new COVID-19 cases were recorded Thursday, September 3.
This now brings to a total of 5,140 the coronavirus cases in the region, which is comprised of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental provinces, and the highly urbanized cities of Iloilo and Bacolod.
Of the 157 new COVID-19 cases, 149 were locally transmitted cases. There were also four repatriated overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), three locally stranded individuals (LSIs) and a frontline worker.
Majority of the new cases was asymptomatic, or 126 out of the 157 new cases.
But Alonsabe noted that there has been an estimated 2,000 new cases recorded in the past two weeks, especially the rise of local cases in Iloilo and Bacolod cities.
While the number of new cases keeps rising, Western Visayas also recorded 130 new recoveries as of Thursday. There are currently 2,397 active cases in the region, and 83 deaths.
