Mayor Zamora favors GCQ extension in NCR

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora on Friday said he is in favor of extending the general community quarantine (GCQ) status in Metro Manila after September 30.

The Metro Manila Council (MMC), where Zamora is one of the 17 members, is set to decide on Sunday whether to extend the GCQ period or downgrade to modified GCQ status.

Under the GCQ status, Zamora said, San Juan has been experiencing a “steady” drop in the number of active cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

As of September 24, he said that the city has 297 active cases.

“I would prefer to see this number go even lower before we shift to MGCQ so as not to waste all that we have gained,” Zamora said. “Better to shift to MGCQ slowly but surely.”

With the decrease in the number of active cases in the city, the mayor said that the measures and protocols being implemented by the local government have an impact in stopping the spread of the disease in the community.

“This means that all of our interventions to bring down the number of cases are working. People are also becoming more disciplined and are adjusting to imposed health protocols,” Zamora said.

President Duterte has earlier extended the GCQ period in the National Capital Region (NCR) until September 30.

Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año also said that most of the metro mayors are in favor of maintaining the GCQ status of the metropolis even beyond September 30.
