Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go has rejected speculations surrounding President Duterte’s health, saying he believes the country’s leader would be able to finish and live beyond his term in 2022.
Go issued the statement following Duterte's remarks on his Barrett’s esophagus and being warned by his doctors of the possibility of having cancer.
“Huwag po kayong mag-alala at ‘yung mga nagpapakalat ng balita, ‘wag po kayong mag-aalala, ‘di totoo ‘yun, at kayang-kaya ni Pangulong Duterte na tapusin ang kaniyang termino (Please don’t worry and to those who are spreading such news. Don’t worry that is not true and President Duterte can very well finish his term) and live beyond his term,” Go said in a recent radio interview.
Go, the President’s closest aide before he became a senator, said he has been with the President for more than 22 years and has heard of his story about his ailment almost yearly.
Still, the senator said, Filipinos have nothing to worry about Duterte’s health as he is physically fit to lead the country.
The lawmaker, likewise, said the President’s remarks about his personal health should be taken by Filipinos as a reminder to also be mindful of their own health, especially now that the country is battling a COVID-19 pandemic.
“Ipinapaalala lang ng Pangulo na mag-ingat tayo, sundin ang payo ng doktor. Sinasabi ng Pangulo, 75-years-old na siya at maraming bawal (The President is just reminding us to be careful, and follow the advice of doctors. The President is just saying, he is 75-years-old already and is facing a lot of restrictions),” he added.
“Ito ang rason kung bakit nagiging mahigpit ang PSG at ang mga doktor sa kanya para masigurong hindi siya magkaroon ng anumang malubhang karamdaman (And this is the reason why the Presidential Security Group and his doctors are strict because they want to ensure he won’t contract any serious disease),” Go pointed out.
Though the President is temporarily staying in Davao City, the senator said Duterte will eventually return to Malacañang for a virtual conference with the King of Jordan where he will discuss the country’s fight against COVID-19 pandemic.
“Babalik na rin siya sa mga susunod na araw sa Manila at marami po siyang gagampanan. Merong virtual conference na inimbitahan siya ng King of Jordan tungkol sa fight against pandemic. Magsasalita po si Pangulo doon (He will return to Manila in a few days because he needs to attend to many things. He has been invited to a virtual conference with the King of Jordan regarding the fight against the pandemic. He will talk there),” Go disclosed.
