A police official who only had less than two years before his retirement from the service was the latest fatality of the Philippine National Police (PNP) from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Based on the PNP data, the 54-year old police official assigned to one of the Regional Maritime Units of the Maritime Group died on October 5 after days of battling the health complications brought about by the coronavirus infection.
He was the 18th PNP personnel who died of COVID 19.
The death of the male police official came as 32 new cases were reported based on the latest result of the swab test released to the PNP. Thirteen of the new cases came from Metro Manila, six from Bicol, and five from Central Luzon.
As of Tuesday night, the PNP recorded 6,227 COVID-19 infections and 5,240 recoveries.
The total number of active cases, however, is only 969 which reflects a high recovery rate in the PNP.
Most of those infected got the virus while deployed in the frontlines, manning border control points, or conducting community patrol.
