Cayetano's resignation drew mixed reactions from colleagues

The decision of Taguig-Pateros 1st District Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano to resign as Speaker today drew mixed reactions from his colleagues. 

Muntinlupa lone district Rep. Rozzano Rufino “Ruffy” Blazon and Quezon City 2nd District Rep. Precious Hipolito Castelo cheered at the “wise” gesture of the former Speaker. 

“It would provide stability to the House. He made a wise decision for the institution,” Blazon said in a text message, after Cayetano, in a Facebook Live post, announced that he is tendering his irrevocable resignation as House Speaker.

Castelo expressed gratitude to Cayetano for acting as a statesman, and for his dynamic leadership that prodded the passage of a number of priority legislation, particularly the measures seeking to strengthen the government’s fight against COVID-19.

“We thank Speaker APC for his statesmanlike act to put the country above anything else. We thank him for steering the House in making it one of the most productive and dynamic in terms of legislative accomplishments,” she said. 

For his part, Ang Probinsyano partylist Rep. Ronnie Ong said, “Rep. Cayetano’s resignation from the Speakership is the honorable thing left to do, not only to abide by the term-sharing agreement but also for the House to resume the swift and successful passing of the budget.”

“As elected representatives of the people, we should not forget that we are still currently in a COVID-19 pandemic , and our priority should be what is best for the people. And we know that what the Filipino people clamors for is that the national budget be passed in a timely manner, and for their government’s united front against the pandemic. Let us prioritize giving due public service to the Filipinos especially during this time,” he said. 

But for Cebu City 2nd District Rep. Rodrigo Abellanosa, Cayetano’s act is nonsensical. “Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano no longer has the position to resign from after the majority of the House members voted Rep. Lord Allan Velasco yesterday as Speaker, and then ratified in today’s session,” he said. 

Negros Oriental 2nd District Rep. Manuel Sagarbarria said he was not surprised by Cayetano’s resignation. “It is expected,” he said. 

In his FB live, Cayetano vowed to continuously extend his support to the initiatives and programs of the Duterte government.
