Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana revealed Monday that the group behind the push for the establishment of a revolutionary government should be investigated for possible violation of the law.

Lorenzana said the call of the Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte-National Executive Coordinating Committee (MRRD-NECC) to abolish the constitutional government and establish a revolutionary government "is illegal and unconstitutional."

"They should be investigated. Of course, it is illegal and unconstitutional," he said.

Several members of the judiciary and political experts from the academe reportedly said that those who call for the establishment of a revolutionary government may be charged for inciting to sedition, and violation of the newly-passed Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020.

Earlier, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said the calls for a revolutionary government would mean the scrapping of the Constitution for the creation of a new one.

Historically, calls for a revolutionary government were made by insurgent groups which wanted to overthrow a sitting government.

However, in the case of the MRRD-NECC, it was deemed ironic as the members of the group are proclaiming themselves as supporters of President Duterte.

"As I said, we have a popularly elected President that still enjoys about 80-percent approval rating," Lorenzana stressed.

Meanwhile, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said it "will not support" any efforts to establish a revolutionary government. 

"It’s very clear to every soldier, airman, sailor, and marine that our unequivocal fidelity and unwavering loyalty is to the Constitution and to the flag that represents our people and the state," said Major General Edgard Arevalo, AFP spokesperson. 

General Gilbert Gapay, AFP Chief of Staff, assured the public that the AFP will uphold its "sacred obligation" of protecting the people and securing the state as mandated by the Constitution.
