4,339 new COVID-19 cases today; total now 178,022 cases – DOH
The Department of Health (DOH) reported today, August 20, 4,339 new individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19, majority of whom are from Metro Manila.

The Philippines hit 178,022 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Thursday as the DOH announced 4,339 new infections. Of the total figure, 61,025 patients are active cases or are currently receiving medical care.
The high number of cases being reported, though, should not discourage people as it shows “that you have expanded your testing capacity,” World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative to the Philippines Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe said.
“Don't be discouraged by the fact that you have a lot of cases being reported nationally, that is an acknowledgment of the fact that you have expanded your testing capacity,” said Abeyasinghe during an online forum on Thursday.
2,590 new cases in Metro
Metro Manila still topped the areas with the most number of new cases at 2,590. It was followed by Laguna with 223, Cavite with 155, Cebu with 128, and Rizal with 109, according to the latest bulletin.
727 new recoveries
The DOH also reported 727 new survivors, raising the number of recoveries to 114,114. Meanwhile, the death toll currently stands at 2,883, with 88 new deaths.
“The fact that you have one of the lowest proportion of fatal cases in the region – also is an acknowledgement that you have expanded your clinical capacity, your hospital capacities. You have equipped your clinicians through proper training,” the WHO official said.
Abeyasinghe said that the Philippines should continue to improve its healthcare capacity, adding that countries should not just rely on the availability of an effective vaccine.
“There are many things that we can do to suppress the transmission of this infection and control this pandemic with the available tools and let’s renew our commitment to do that,’ said the WHO official.
“We need to continue to work on this part so we can successfully control this pandemic,” he added.
