1,987 new COVID cases reported, bringing PH total to 228, 403

The Department of Health confirmed over 1,900 additional cases of COVID-19 Thursday, bringing to the country's total to over 228,000.

The DoH said that 1,987 more people have been afflicted with coronavirus, bringing the country’s cumulative tally to 228,403, with 65,240 cases currently receiving treatment.

Most of the new cases are still in Metro Manila with 818, while Cavite had 153 new patients, Laguna had 125, Negros Occidental had 122, and Rizal had 78.

The DoH also reported 880 new recoveries, raising the tally to 159,475. Meanwhile, 65 more fatalities were recorded, bringing the death toll to 3,688.

Among the newly reported deaths, two died this month, 55 in August, six in July, and one each from June and April.

The Health department said it removed 24 duplicates from the total case count as part of its “constant cleaning and validation” process.

Researchers from the University of Philippines said that COVID-19 infections in the Philippines may reach 375,000 by the end of September.

“We would like to reiterate that projections are based on various models and assumptions. In addition, the number of new cases per day and the trends should always be analyzed along with our health system capacity to ensure that there are enough resources for COVID-19 cases,” the DoH said.

“Hence, the department would like to remind the public that minimum health standards shall still be observed,” it added.
