Western Visayas records highest single-day COVID-19 deaths

ILOILO CITY—The Department of Health (DOH-6) has recorded the single-highest number of deaths from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Western Visayas region with five new fatalities recorded Saturday, August 8.

The new fatalities included a 57-year-old man from Bacolod City, a 61-year-old man from Silay City, a 68-year-old woman from Iloilo City, a 40-year-old man from Iloilo City, a 48-year-old woman from Numancia town of Aklan province.

Dr. Renilyn Reyes, chief of DOH-6’s Public Health Project Development, said that two of the five new fatalities have been infected by a previous COVID-19 case.

“The other two, we are still verifying ,” Reyes told Manila Bulletin in an interview Sunday, August 9.

Reyes emphasized that majority of them had underlying health conditions including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and asthma while another patient had breast cancer.

The five new deaths recorded were among the nine COVID-19 deaths recorded between August 1 and 8.

It included the region’s youngest fatality: a seven-year-old girl from Dumangas town, Iloilo province who had no travel history.

“This number is quite alarming,” Reyes warned.

Between March and August 8, there are now 31 people in Western Visayas who died from COVID-19.
