ILOILO CITY (PNA) – The number of confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in Western Visayas has reached 1,547, with 129 new cases reported by the Department of Health (DOH) on Monday.

The DOH also recorded another death, bringing the total number of fatalities to 21. The region has recorded deaths for four consecutive days since Friday.

Dr. Reynilyn Reyes, the spokesperson of the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD6), said the 129 new cases were from the 1,120 laboratory results that were released by the four COVID-19 laboratories in the region.

“Of the 129 new cases, we have 96 returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs), that is 74 percent out of the total new cases. We have 27 locally stranded individuals (LSIs) and six local cases,” she said in a statement.

Four of the local cases were from this city’s Mandurriao district, and one each from Negros Occidental and Bacolod City.

Meanwhile, 18 of the confirmed LSI cases were from Negros Occidental and nine from Iloilo province. For ROFs, 35 were from Negros Occidental, 27 from Iloilo province, 17 from Bacolod City, nine from Iloilo City, seven from Capiz, and one from Guimaras.

The bulk of cases were still from ROFs and LSIs, she added.

The highest number of new confirmed cases came from test results recorded at the Qualimed Hospital Molecular Laboratory with 97; 12 from the Western Visayas Medical Center sub-national laboratory and 20 from the Teresita Jalandoni Provincial Hospital Molecular Laboratory.

Seven of these cases were from Capiz, one from Guimaras, 36 from Iloilo province, 13 from Iloilo City, 54 from Negros Occidental, and 18 from Bacolod City.

“With these, the total cumulative cases in the region is already 1, 547. Of these 788 are active cases, which is 51 percent of the total cases,” she said.

Three of the new cases were placed on home quarantine, and the rest were quarantined in facilities.

The number of new recoveries in the region, she said, was at 32, thus raising the total to 738.

The data showed that there were already more active cases in the region when compared with recovered patients.

The latest death in the region was a 38-year-old male LSI from Bago City, Negros Occidental. On Sunday, the 20th fatality was a 74-year-old local case from this city’s Arevalo district.

The new mortality was swabbed on June 21, the result came out positive June 30 and he died on August 2.

“His immediate cause of death was cardiogenic shock secondary to myocardial infarction,” she said.
