Vice President Leni Robredo on Thursday slammed Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) deputy administrator Mocha Uson for allegedly spreading fake news about her relief work following the steam-driven eruption of Taal Volcano.

On January 14, Robredo visited affected residents of three towns in Batangas who are staying in evacuation centers after they fled their homes due to the Taal Volcano eruption. Her office brought a total of 1,000 face masks and 2,101 food packs for the evacuees. Every food pack contains 1.5 kilos of rice, assorted canned goods, and two packs of noodles. These donations came from Angat Buhay partners such as Vice Squad, Scale Experts, Inc., CDO Foodsphere Inc., RAF International Forwarding Phils, and other donors in partnership with non-government organization Kaya Natin! Movement. But a day after her relief work, several false posts made the rounds online after a netizen claimed she only gave out five pieces of bread and a bottle of water to evacuees. The OWWA official reposted this on her Facebook page, with a caption: “Hindi nakakapagtaka na galit ang mga tao sa mga istilong bulok na ganito. Hindi din kasi ito ang unang pagkakataong inuna ni Leni ang pagpapa photo ops kaysa sa pagtulong mga biktima ng trahedya.” (No wonder the people are angry on this old style. This is not the first time Leni prioritized photo ops than helping the victims of the tragedy.) The Vice President debunked the post as “fake news.” “Pati ba naman trahedya, gagamitin pa para magsinungaling (They would even use the tragedy to make lies),” she said.
