VP: P4M in public donations to help healthcare workers

About P4 million in public donations has been received by the Office of the Vice President (OVP) to help healthcare workers and other personnel in the frontlines of the fight against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Vice President Leni Robredo said on Sunday.

(Charlie Villegas, OVP / MANILA BULLETIN) Robredo, who is the leader of the opposition, said the money raised will be used for the purchase of 6,143 sets of personal protective equipment (PPE) for COVID-19 frontliners. “As of 12 noon today, we hit the 4M mark!!! That’s just 39 hours after we made the first call,” the vice president said in a post on her personal Facebook page. “Assuming that every health personnel will change twice a day, we will be able to serve 204 people for 15 days with this amount,” Robredo noted. The OVP, in partnership with Angat Buhay partner Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership, is currently conducting a fund drive to help frontline personnel with their needs. Robredo said they also received 3,075 food and care packages for them. In her weekly radio show, “BISErbisyong Leni,” she said these care packages will be distributed to affected communities in Marikina and Quezon City and public hospitals in need of assistance such as the Research Institute for Tropical Medicines (RITM) where some COVID-19 patients are admitted, Lung Center of the Philippines, and the Philippine General Hospital (PGH). The vice president underscored the need to adequately protect COVID-19 frontliners with protective gear and proper compensation. Police and military personnel are manning entry and exit points in Metro Manila in line with the 30-day community quarantine imposed by the government to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The community quarantine started on March 15 and will last until April 14. “Huwag naman nating hahayaan na iyong frontliners natin malalagay sa alanganin. Ang laki ng sakripisyo para sa kanila, pero siguraduhin natin na protected sila,” she said. (We should not allow our frontliners to be compromised. They are making enough sacrifices as it is so we have to protect them.)
