"The DOH has our support in its call for a state of public health emergency. We want to see from Secretary Duque what kind of assistance it needs from the Senate so we can act swiftly given the three session days left," Villanueva told reporters in a text message.
The DOH called for the declaration of a public health emergency after confirming on Saturday the sixth case of the new coronavirus infection in the country, involving the wife of a 62-year-old man who tested positive for COVID-19 despite not having traveled to countries infected by the pathogen.
With this, Duque confirmed the local transmission of the virus.
Following the DOH's recommendation, President Duterte has reportedly agreed to declare a state of public health emergency.
