UP calls for PPE donations for scientists

By Ellalyn de Vera-Ruiz The University of the Philippines (UP) is calling for donations of personal protective equipment (PPE) for scientists who will be handling and studying the genetic sequencing of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) samples. UP's Philippine Genome Center (PGC), in coordination with the health workers from UP Manila's National Institutes of Health (NIHS), will be handling the sequencing of COVID-19 samples for the next two weeks. The study of coronavirus samples will provide the scientists with crucial scientific information on how to mitigate the spread of the disease. "In our effort to continually protect the PGC skeletal work force during this national health emergency, we will accept PPE donations, such as N95 masks, surgical masks, disposable impermeable laboratory gowns and caps, face shields, and shoe covers to replenish our supplies," UP said. Donations can be dropped off from Monday to Friday at 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the lobby of the PGC Building located at A. Ma. Regidor St., National Science Complex, UP Diliman Campus, Quezon City. PGC Deputy Director Dr. Raul Destura and other scientists and researchers from NIHS and PGC led the development of a detection kit that will help in the early detection and effective treatment of COVID-19. The testing kit will be undergoing a field validation for two to three weeks before it can be released to a full commercial platform.
