Suspension of classes ordered, mulled by Davao del Norte LGUs

By Armando Fenequito Jr. DAVAO CITY -- Some local government units (LGUs) in Davao del Norte have declared suspension of classes due to the continuing threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the country. Santo Tomas town declared the class suspension effective March 11 in light of the Malacañang proclamation, declaring a state of public health emergency amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak. In a statement released on Tuesday night, Mayor Ernesto Evangelista said the suspension will be in all levels in all public and private schools as precautionary measures being undertaken by the municipal government against the possible spread of the coronavirus. He also appealed to all parents and guardians not to allow their children to roam around in public places if their activities are non-essentials. The Island Garden City of Samal (IGACoS) in Davao del Norte will also be suspending its classes starting Monday, March 16, to prevent children from possible exposure to COVID-19 In a phone interview on Tuesday afternoon, IGACoS information officer Micheal Anthony Homez said Mayor Al David Uy is about to issue an executive order for the suspension of classes starting March 16. “Ang order ni Mayor is up to March 13 lang ang klase from elementary to senior high school (The order of the Mayor is the class for this school year should be only up to March 13 from elementary to senior high school), ”Homez said. Homez said Uy already consulted with the Department of Education (DepEd) regarding his declaration and got the green light since it will be for the welfare of the students. The information officer said, the DepEd also told the Mayor that this week is the schedule of their final exams and it will be a good opportunity that by next week they will have no classess anymore. He also said that all graduation, recognition ang moving up ceremony will be also postponed for the meantime, until the declaration of State of Public Health Emergency will be lifted by the president. Panabo City Mayor Jose Relampagos also announced class suspension in the city through his Twitter post due to the same matter. Relampagos said he will release an Executive order regarding his declaration.
