By Hanah Tabios It’s payback time for the survivors of the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption as Pampanga province sends aid to the victims of the eruption of Taal volcano in Batangas. Pampanga Governor Dennis Delta (Facebook) Pampanga Governor Dennis Delta announced on social media on Monday that the province will send 8,500 food packs for the primary victims of the Taal eruption. He also said teams of medical personnel, social workers, and search and rescue personnel have been deployed along with search and rehabilitation equipment to aid evacuation efforts in the affected areas. “Ito po ay ating pasasalamat dahil noon pong pumutok ang bulkang Pinatubo, marami po ang tumulong sa atin para iligtas tayo at makabangon,” the governor said. (This is our way of showing thanks, because when Pinatubo erupted, many helped rescue us and set us back on our feet.) The June 15, 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in Pampanga is considered the second largest eruption in the 20th century. The deadly eruption killed thousands of individuals and caused billions of pesos of property damage. According to the United States Geological Survey, the “heavy damage was caused by ash fall, which buried large tracts of land and collapsed roofs of buildings near the volcano.” The ash fall covered many parts of Luzon including Metro Manila, and heavily affected the provinces adjacent to Mount Pinatubo such as Pampanga, Tarlac, and Zambales.
