The President issued the directive after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the public alert about the escalating volcanic activity of Taal.
“President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has already given instructions to undertake measures necessary to place the people within the perimeter of Taal out of the danger zone,” Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a statement Sunday.
He said concerned government agencies are now working closely with the provincial government of Batangas “to ensure the safety of the residents, including their evacuation.”
Taal Volcano, located in Batangas, has unleashed an kilometer-high ash column Sunday, prompting authorities to hoist the Alert Level 3. The volcano, according to Phivolcs, has “escalated its eruptive activity, generating an eruption plume one kilometer high, accompanied by volcanic tremor and felt earthquakes."
The Palace meantime has called for public vigilance as it keeps tabs on the Taal’s latest volcanic activity.
Panelo noted that Phivolcs has upgraded the Alert Status to Level 3 “which means increasing the tendency towards an eruption.”
“The Palace is closely monitoring the situation of Taal Volcano,” he said.
“We advise the public to continue to remain vigilant,” he added.
