Lieutenant Ariesh Climacosa, acting commanding officer of the Navy public affairs unit, said the contingent conducted humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations at the Immaculate Concepcion Pastoral Parish Center where several hundred families took refuge.
The contingent who included personnel from the Civil Military Operations Group, Marine Combat Service Support Battalion and Naval Reserve Command, handed out relief packs to residents containing a kilo of rice, two cans of sardines, instant noodles, hygiene kits, blankets, surgical masks and bottled water.
"These benevolent endeavors of our very supportive and reliable reservists are just the start of a series of HADR operations," Climacosa said.
"This shows that the PN actively engages in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to aid and save precious lives of our countrymen particularly those who are affected by the calamity."
The contingent which included actor and military reservists Master Sergeant Dingdong Dantes and PO3 Rocco Nacino, collaborated with non-government organizations Damayang Pinoy-Taal and Yes Pinoy Foundation.
Meanwhile, at least 32 disaster risk reduction teams (DRRTs) within Manila and Cavite areas were fielded by the Navy to help in the evacuation of thousands of residents that remain trapped in hazard areas because of Taal's unrest.
The teams were tasked to utilize all available assets for the relief operations of the affected residents.
As of Saturday morning, 22,472 families (96,061 individuals) have already been affected by the unrest of Taal in Batangas, Cavite and Laguna, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
Of this number, 16,174 families (70,413 individuals) are staying in 300 evacuation centers while others joined relatives in other provinces. Several hundreds to thousands more are believed trapped in their houses as they await rescuers.
Alert Level 4 is still raised over Taal volcano as of Saturday morning which means that an imminent eruption is likely to happen within hours or days.
