By Jhon Casinas The local government of Pasig City has temporarily allowed the limited operation of tricycles within the city’s borders despite the implementation of the “enhanced community quarantine” over the threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto (KEVIN TRISTAN ESPIRITU / MANILA BULLETIN) “Sa ngayon ay pinapayagan ko ang limitadong pagbiyahe ng mga tricycle sa loob ng Pasig (I allowed for the meantime the limited trip of tricycles within Pasig),” Mayor Vico Sotto said Tuesday. “Our risk assessment shows that we cannot completely ban tricycles at this point,” he added. The city mayor noted that the limited operation of tricycles were allowed as long as they would follow guidelines of limiting their number of passengers to ensure social distancing. He explained that there are health workers that need to report for work as well as workers and employees that render essential services to the people. Sotto also elaborated that there were emergencies where tricycles could only be used because of the tight passages in a particular area. “Paalala lang din na ang pwede lang sumakay ay ang mga exempted sa quarantine,” the mayor noted. Based on the guidelines set by the government, those exempted from the quarantine were workers and employees going to and coming from work, individuals purchasing food and other essential necessities, medical reasons and other emergencies. Moreover, on-duty health workers, law enforcement personnel, any government employees while in the performance of their duties and responsibilities, and any person involved in an emergency situation were exempted. President Duterte on Monday placed the entire island of Luzon under an enhanced community quarantine amid the threat of the disease. The quarantine seeks to limit the movement of people to prevent the further spread of the disease. Following the declaration, mass public transport including trains, buses, and jeepneys, were suspended.
