Pasig gov't hosts women's forum on gender and disability
The Pasig City local government hosted a forum on gender equality, inclusion, and sensitivity for women as it commemorated the 19th Women with Disability Day on Monday, March 27, during Women’s Month.
The event was done in line with the National Council of Disability Affairs’ celebrations of the occasion, highlighting the importance of triumphs achieved and tribulations faced by women or non-gender conforming persons with disabilities.
Around 100 women from various women and persons with disabilities (PWDs) organizations in Pasig attended the forum.
Among the groups were the Pasig City Kidney Patient Association, Pasigueño Deaf Society, Abot-Kamay ng mga may Kapansanan Ang Pagunlad ng Pasigueño (AKKAPP) Pasig Federation, Incorporated, Pasig League of PWDs Federation, Incorporated, and Pasig City Children with Disabilities (CWD) Under Parent Federation, Incorporated.

A lecture on gender equality and inclusive society and gender sensitive training were conducted by Maria Lourdes T. Jarabe, PhD, and Edgardo L. Razon respectively. Jarabe focused on the intersection of disability and gender, wherein gender norms and expectations correlate and affect the lives of PWDs. Among the topics discussed were gender issues and biases such as stereotyping, subordination, gender-based violence, and marginalization. A sign language interpreter, Liz Vallesteros, was also present to make the lectures more inclusive to all audience members.

Pasig City Vice Mayor Robert “Dodot” Jaworski Jr. graced the event to showcase his support to the forum. “Sa pagdiriwang natin ng World Women’s Month at sa pagtatatag ng mas inklusibong komunidad, hindi dapat natin isawalang bahala ang kapakanan at karapatan ng ating mga PWD (As we celebrate World Women’s Month and in establishing a more inclusive community, we should not ignore the rights and conditions of our PWDs),” said the Office of the Vice Mayor in a social media post. Throughout Women’s Month, the local government has been ramping up efforts to create more women and gender-centric policies and programs. Last March 6 to 8, the local Gender and Development sector in Pasig held [a seminar to develop the city’s overall GAD Agenda and GAD Strategic Framework](https://mb.com.ph/2023/03/09/pasig-lgu-readies-local-gender-and-development-agenda/). It aims to address issues like women and LGBTQ+ discrimination, violence against women and children (VAWC), family planning, and health services for women and non-binary persons. Last March 14, a [“Negosyo Pasigueña” seminar](https://mb.com.ph/2023/3/15/500-women-join-negosyo-pasiguena-forum) was conducted to educate women on financial literacy, promote economic empowerment for women, and showcase the city’s programs on accessible business start-ups and assistance for entrepreneurs. For health services in particular, the local government is also striving to use a gender-based lens in implementing services for women suffering from tuberculosis (TB) through [Gender Responsiveness in TB Prevention and Management conference](https://mb.com.ph/2023/3/24/pasig-lgu-women-orgs-hold-conference-on-gender-based-response-to-tb) last March 23.
