Panelo: PRRD gives Morente chance to improve BI after 'pastillas' expose

President Duterte has given Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Jaime Morente a “chance” to address the alleged corruption issues hounding the agency, Malacañang said Tuesday.
The President made the decision after Morente presented his plans to improve transparency in the bureau’s immigration work and resolve issues hounding the bureau in the Cabinet meeting last Monday, according to Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo.

"Apparently he is giving Commissioner Morente a chance to do some innovations in the immigration department...to do something about the problem in the immigration,” Panelo said in a Palace press briefing.
"The tone there is he is not involved. Otherwise, he would have been removed," he added.
One of Morente's proposals is the issuance of an executive order to combat corruption and other irregularities in the bureau.
"He (Morente) reported what they intend to do about it. In other words, they are introducing an executive order, if I’m not mistaken, to address certain issues that have been raised,” Panelo said.
Morente's plan also included transparency measures to prohibit “secrecy” when immigration personnel conduct their work with arriving or departing passengers, according to Panelo.
"What was presented there was what they will do about it, how they will tackle, how there should be a separate room for the immigration officials to interview that the public can see. In other words, the immigration official will be transparent in any kind of investigation or interview they will conduct in reference to those coming in and going out," he said.
"There should be no secrecy in conversations between an immigration official and a passenger."
The latest move to clean up the immigration bureau came following the exposé on the alleged ‘pastillas’ bribery scam. Chinese workers allegedly paid bribes to some immigration personnel to facilitate their smooth entry into the country.
Panelo noted that the President earlier vouched for the integrity of Morente. But he maintained that it does not mean the BI chief will be exempted from any probe into the bribery scandal.
"There is nobody who is exempted from any investigation when there is a complaint of corruption. Regardless of who you are, if there is a complaint, you will be investigated," he said.
