OFWs hope gov't will allow them to return to Hong Kong

By Czarina Nicole Ong Ki After the government revoked the travel ban earlier imposed on Taiwan, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) expressed hope that the Philippine government will do the same for Hong Kong and allow him and his fellow workers to travel back to where they are employed. Overseas Filipino Workers(MANILA BULLETIN) Overseas Filipino Workers(MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) The spread of the COVID-19 prompted the government to impose a temporary ban on people travelling to and from China and its Special Administrative Regions (SARs) - Hong Kong and Macau. While the ban aimed to protect Filipinos from the virus, a group called #StrandedPH is suffering from the brunt of the order. Joms Ortega told ABS-CBN News that they are appealing to the International Court of Justice to convince the Philippine government to revoke the travel ban in Hong Kong. "#StrandedPH is appealing and not threatening the government. We are hoping they would consider our appeal dahil naghihirap na rin 'yong mga tao dito, (because the people here are really suffering)," said Ortega. The longer they are away from work, the more they are at risk of losing their sources of income. "Since wala sila doon (they are not there), no work no pay. Some might be terminated or have already been terminated dahil urgent ang kailangan ng employers (because their employers' needs are urgent)," he added. Ortega likewise said that they are willing to sign any waiver as long as the government allows them to travel back to Hong Kong.
