Manila City government donates P2.5 million to Taal volcano victims

By Minka Tiangco The Manila City government donated a total of P2.5 million worth of financial assistance to five municipalities who were the most badly hit by Taal volcano's phreatic eruption. (Manila PIO / MANILA BULLETIN) (Manila PIO / MANILA BULLETIN) Members of the Manila City Council passed Resolution No. 1 series of 2020, authorizing the release of the financial aid. The municipalities of Talisay, Taal, Agoncillo, Lemery, and Laurel, all in Batangas, are to receive P500,000 each, the Manila Public Information Office announced on Thursday. "The City Council of Manila saw the urgency to extend financial assistance to the municipalities, particularly the top 5 most affected determined upon the recommendation of the National or Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council," the resolution read. The funds were sourced from the city's local disaster risk reduction and management fund. "Nagpapasalamat po ako dahil tayong mga Batang Maynila ay nagkakaisa para matulungan ang ating mga kapwa Pilipino na dumaranas ngayon ng matinding pagsubok dulot ng pagsabog ng Bulkang Taal (I am grateful because Manila City residents are uniting to help our fellow Filipinos who are experiencing a major challenge caused by Taal volcano's eruption)," Manila City Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso said in a statement. The Manila City government is the latest local government unit in Metro Manila to extend financial aid to those affected by Taal volcano's eruptive activity. On Wednesday, the Valenzuela City government announced that they will be donating P12 million in cash and in kind to the victims of the volcano's eruption. Recently, Muntinlupa City extended P3 million of financial aid and over 3,000 relief packs to those who were affected in the calamity. San Juan City also made a P2-million donation. Several other metro local government units have also donated and participated in disaster relief operations.
