Cops subdue man who took own daughter hostage in Sampaloc, Manila


A man who held his six-year-old daughter hostage in Sampaloc, Manila on Tuesday, March 28, was subdued and arrested by responding policemen.

The Manila Police District (MPD) identified the suspect as John Eric Morales Bernal, 31, jobless, and a resident of Sampaloc, Manila.

The incident happened at the roof deck of an apartment building on Jhocson Street, Sampaloc, Manila at around 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Investigation showed that the police received a phone call regarding the hostage-taking incident from a concerned citizen at 2:57 p.m. and immediately went to the area.

Responding operatives saw the suspect holding his youngest daughter as a hostage using a tari or kinkelder blade.

Police immediately positioned themselves at the stairway of the roof deck as the suspect’s wife tried to convince him to surrender, the report said.

After receiving a go-signal from the suspect's wife, police rushed to the site and arrested the suspect.

The victim was rescued unharmed and was turned over to her family.

The suspect is now under custody for investigation and documentation.
