Isko suspends all classes in Manila until March 15

By Minka Tiangco Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on Monday ordered the suspension of classes in all levels, both public and private schools, from March 9, Monday to March 15, Sunday over threats of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Domagoso announced this after the Department of Health (DOH) said it is up to the local government units to suspend classes in their jurisdiction. However, Domagoso encouraged students and school officials to continue school work through online platforms. “As much as possible, if it is possible to go on online education para hindi naman masayang ang mga araw (so we do not waste the days),” he said in a Special Report broadcasted live on Facebook on Monday afternoon. He also called on school officials to disinfect their schools during the week-long class suspension. The local chief executive further announced that there are 14 persons under monitoring (PUMs) in the city that may be carrying the virus. There are 32 PUMs in Metro Manila. President Duterte on Monday declared a State of Public Health Emergency after the DOH confirmed the first case of local transmission in the country. On Monday, the health department announced that number of COVID-19 cases increased to 20. Meanwhile, Navotas Mayor Toby Tiangco said Monday he decided to suspend Monday's classes in the city following the first local COVID-19 transmission case in the country. During the weekly flag ceremony at Navotas City Hall, Tiangco said that he announced the suspension of classes as early as Saturday to be on the “safe side.” In Caloocan City and Marikina City, classes in all levels, public and private, are suspended until March 11, Wednesday. Pasay City and Cainta also suspended classes in all levels, public and private, until March 10, Tuesday. In La Union, the San Fernando City government postponed all scheduled fiesta events in-lined for the 22nd founding anniversary beginning from March 10-31, 2020 due to the declaration of a State of National Public Health Emergency. Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong also cancelled the 25th Panagbenga Festival. Baguio City Night Market on Harrison Roadwill also be closed for 14 days. Likewise, the Commission on Elections announced on Monday the suspension of the ongoing voter registration.
