The President said he intends to visit Kuwait and seek the "maximum" penalty for the suspects involved in the killing of a Filipino worker.
"In the Middle East, while I talk my heart bleeds, kaya pupunta talaga ako sa (that's why I will really go to) Kuwait. I have to go to Kuwait," he said in a press conference at the Palace Monday night.
The President has welcomed the arrest of the suspects behind the death of the Filipina domestic worker, saying it was "good justice." He said he would ask for the death sentence for the suspects.
"They have arrested the couple and undergoing trial, and while undergoing trial they are detained inside the jail. To me that's good justice,” he said.
"If they can follow through in accordance with their laws, I will ask for the maximum. I want the executioner to cut off the heads of those responsible for the death of the Filipino."
Duterte was apparently referring to the case of Filipino worker Jeanelyn Villavende who was killed allegedly by her employers last December. The incident led to calls for the partial ban on the deployment of OFWs to the Gulf state.
The 2018 murder of Filipino worker Joanna Demafelis previously triggered the crafting of a labor protection pact for Filipinos working in Kuwait. Duterte earlier expressed outrage over the death of Demafelis, who was found stuffed in a freezer in an abandoned apartment.
Duterte threatened to pull out Filipino workers from Kuwait due to reports of abuse and maltreatment by employers.
