Duterte begins tourism promotion with visit to Boracay on March 12

(CZAR DANCEL / MANILA BULLETIN) “It is the first time he's going to Boracay since it opened ... so probably he will look at all the changes in Boracay... It is a way of promoting domestic tourism,” said Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat in a press briefing. The Tourism chief said they are still planning the activities of the President during his set visit to the world-famous island. Last February 19, the DOT said that President Duterte will be going around the major islands in the country, including Boracay, Bohol, and Cebu to show both local and foreign tourists that it is safe to travel in the Philippines amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) scare. Puyat said her department is focusing on boosting domestic tourism “now that inbound arrivals have expectedly decreased and with several temporary travel bans in place.” “Thankfully, the private sector has shown their support in this endeavor; airlines started rolling out discounted flights around the country and DOT-accredited hotels and resorts will be lowering their prices as well, offering as much as 70 percent discount from their published rates,” said Puyat. “The Department of Health’s current data show that travelling around the country remains safe, highlighting the fact that we don’t have any local transmissions,” she added.
