Education Secretary Leonor Briones and other officials and personnel of the Department of Education (DepEd) are currently on home quarantine as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The DepEd said that it has received an advice that one of the participants in two meetings attended by several of its officials and personnel, held on February 28 and March 5, had tested positive for COVID-19.
DepEd said that the February 28 meeting - which lasted for about three hours - was held in the DepEd Central Office Mabini Building while the March 5 meeting was the earlier reported hearing at the Philippine Senate.
DepEd said that none of its officials and personnel “has exhibited symptoms of respiratory illness or diarrhea.” However, consistent with Department of Health (DOH) protocols, DepEd said that the concerned personnel and officials have “undertaken the necessary precautions” - including home quarantine.
While Briones “did not have any contact with the confirmed case patient” - she is also “now on home quarantine as extra precautionary measure.” The DepEd Chief is 79 years old.
The DepEd assured that its officials and personnel “will continue to discharge their functions through telecommunication platforms.” Aside from Briones, DepEd has yet to clarify how many officials and personnel were advised to self-quarantine.
DepEd said it is in close coordination with the DOH for “guidance on its management of the situation.” Other DepEd officials and personnel “who may be exhibiting symptoms of respiratory illness have standing instructions” to coordinate with the DepEd Task Force COVID-19 for “proper assessment of risk, and for guidance.”
