In an interview, DepEd 11 Spokesperson Genielito Atillo said that, with the recent guidelines, they were not inclined to order the suspension of classes “because the situation does not merit (the action)”.
“What we have from the DOH (Department of Health) is the raising of the alert system to Code Red Sublevel 1. What we need at least to have in order to suspend classes is code red scenario (Sublevel) 2,” he said.
President Duterte announced the suspension of classes in all levels in Metro Manila from March 10 to 14 following an intera-gency meeting on the coronavirus outbreak as most of the confirmed recorded cases in the country were from the region (NCR).
He said, however, the department was still monitoring the situation every now and then because their actions will be dependent on the future developments on “the problem of this COVID-19”.
Meanwhile, the DepEd 11 official also confirmed that activities which have been given a go signal last month were also suspended.
One of which was the Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) meet which was scheduled on April 1 to 7, 2020 at Davao de Oro.

“Yesterday, we have confirmed the suspension of this (indefinitely). Indefinite until we will be given a green light to proceed,” he said, stressing that all concerned of the supposed undertaking to continuously monitor the daily information coming form the Department of Education.
Atillo said the DepEd was hoping that the situation will normalize soon.
“In the previous months, the situation seem to have settled down. Which is why we lifted some suspension of the declaration of cancellations but again, we are now doing it back because we have a worsening kind of situation,” he said.
It can be recalled that the department had previously issued a memorandum suspending all national and regional activities, but was again lifted so long as the schools are compliant with the DOH’s issued guidelines in conducting activities gathering huge number of people.
Atillo said the DepEd’s move and plans will all be dependent on how things will go in the later days with this issue of the local transmission of COVID-19.
“I urge the public that what might we have announced today might change tomorrow, either for the good or not so good depending on the situation of COVID-19. While we are suspending or cancelling some activities today (March 10), we might lift the suspension or continue what we have cancelled. That will all depend as we go on with our monitoring on this COVID-19 scare,” he said.
