The Department of Education (DepEd) said on Monday it is monitoring learners and personnel who may be at risk for the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
In its Situational Report No. 17, DepEd data as of Feb. 13 showed that three persons under monitoring are from the Cagayan, Lasam District school division.

“One Grade 7 student is on home quarantine with two elementary students and result of test is pending,” DepEd said, adding that their exposure is from their mother who arrived from Macau.
In a press conference late Monday afternoon, Undersecretary Alain Pascua said the Grade 7 student already tested negative for the coronavirus, while DepEd is still waiting for the results of the other two.
DepEd also said two learners from Cebu province with upper respiratory tract infection are being “closely monitored” by their respective rural health units (RHU) since Feb. 12 after being exposed to the father who has travel history to an affected area.
Meanwhile, the reported quarantined personnel from Misamis Occidental Division had travel history to Australia, and one personnel from Malaybalay Division had a flight lay-over in China.
DepEd noted that Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo earlier suspended classes Feb. 5 to 7 in all public schools in the province due to the threat of the COVID-19.
DepEd said there were 333, 206 learners in 899 schools that were affected by the suspension of classes at all levels in Region VII. “Private schools were given the discretion whether or not to suspend classes,” DepEd said.
The Department also said Alternative Delivery Modes of education were given to quarantined learners who have exhibited symptoms (fever, cough, and colds) and other contagious infections.
Meanwhile, Pascua noted that DepEd will further intensify its campaign to prevent the possible spread of COVID-19 among its learners and personnel. Other actions taken by DepEd include information campaigns and hand washing drills in various schools; the distribution of alcohol, sanitizers, hand soap, and vitamins; coordination with LGUs; and clean-up drives.
Other prevention and control measures include placing travel limitations and restrictions and the suspension of national and regional activities and off-campus activities for February 2020.
