DA to take temporary care of livestock, pets in Taal eruption-affected areas
By Chito Chavez
The Department of Agriculture (DA) has assured livestock owners and farmers in the Taal Volcano eruption-affected areas that they need not sell their animals as the agency will provide them with assistance.
DA Regional Executive Director for Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) Arnel de Mesa (DA)
DA Regional Executive Director for Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) Arnel de Mesa said the DA will temporarily take care of the animals for affected livestock owners and farmers until the situation returns to normal.
He said his office had already sought the help of the various local government units (LGUs) and private farm owners in caring for the animals of the Taal Volcano eruption victims.
In this way, De Mesa said that livestock owners will not be anxious and insist on returning to their homes within the 14-kilometer danger zone to check on their animals.
De added that the implementation guidelines for those who want to sell their animals or those who want the DA to temporarily care for their livestock will be completed within the week. The animals to be assisted will be limited to cattle, carabao, goat, horse, and sheep.
DA also provided aid to the affected farmers, including animal owners, through the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation, in the event that their animals and farm produce have been insured.
On Monday, DA Secretary William Dar handed out checks to the qualified beneficiaries.
