Coast Guard building own quarantine facility

A quarantine facility dedicated to Philippine Coast Guard frontliners will be built in its base in Taguig City and is expected to be completed in September.

Once completed, the facility will be able to accommodate a total of 224 personnel.

“Actually, the capacity is 250 people, but some of the accommodation will be for our medical staff. Through God’s intervention and blessing, finally, we pursue this project. In 30 days, it will be realized, once and for all,” said Admiral George Ursabia Jr., Coast Guard commandant.

A contract signing ceremony with Multi-B Construction Corp. was held Wednesday for the P35-million isolation center.

Ursabia said good quality container vans will be utilized in the construction of the facility. It will be equipped with sewerage, electrical, and air conditioning systems, as well as a modest entertainment facility that may help ease the boredom of frontline personnel during their isolation period.

The commandant added that the project fund will come from the 2019 capital outlay and the 2020 maintenance and other operating expenses (MOOE) budget of the Coast Guard and from the financial aid of the Department of Budget and Management.

“Once we have this quarantine facility, we can manage our positive cases accordingly and it will prevent our personnel from being exposed to more serious cases in government quarantine facilities,” Ursabia stressed.

As of Aug.  4, the Coast Guard Medical Service has reported a total of 530 recoveries from the 676 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 within the organization, leaving the number of active cases to 146. Majority of them are asymptomatic.

According to Commodore Armand Balilo, Coast Guard spokesman, the organization came up with the idea to build its own quarantine facility to “help shorten the recuperation period of its personnel as it provides protection from exposure to more serious cases among other government frontline personnel, thereby allowing them to return to service in the soonest possible time as well.”
