Central Luzon police ready to be deployed if needed by volcano eruption victims

By Franco Regala CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga — The entire Central Luzon police force has been placed under full alert status following the eruption of Taal Volcano Sunday that forced thousands of residents in nearby villages and towns to evacuate. P/Brig. Gen Rhodel Sermonia, CL police director, said that he ordered all personnel to be prepared for deployment to assist in disaster and relief operations in case they would be badly needed. He also gave the assurance that relief supplies were already in place for distribution. “More than 1,000 search and rescue personnel are also on standby for possible deployment along with 3 trucks and a coaster van,” Sermonia said. According to him, timely advisories, as well as safety tips relative to this natural catastrophe, were also being posted in social media for the information of the public. In its memorandum dated January 13, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council 3 (RDRRMC3) disclosed that the alert status in the region was raised from Alert 3 (magmatic unrest) to Alert 4 (hazardous eruption imminent), which means that hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours or days. Sermonia urged the public to be vigilant and to use masks or cover their noses and mouths when outside to minimize the effects of the ash fall.
