Animals in Taal die because of ashfall

(Photo Courtesy of Pale Colona via Hanah Tabios / MANILA BULLETIN) According to a report from CNN Philippines on Monday, Balete, Batangas Mayor Wilson Maralit said that some of the residents came back to rescue their animals but none of the animals survived the hazardous ashfall of Taal. “Kanina pong madaling araw, sila (ilang residente) po ay nagbalik sa bulkan para iligtas ang kanilang hayop. Pero pagdating nila doon ay walang nadatnan na buhay,” Maralit said. Due to the sudden phreatic explosion of Taal, residents from Balete, Batangas hurriedly escaped their homes but their animals were left behind. Prolonged exposure to ash can be fatal to animals and may cause respiratory problems, according to the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia sent their animal rescue team at Taal Volcano evacuation centers to provide food and basic veterinary care to the evacuated animals. The organization said in a statement that it is ready to help animals on the island when permitted. Authorities have yet to identify the specific number of animal fatalities.
