2,249 policemen infected but PNP remains unfazed

The Philippine National Police (PNP) assured on Sunday the continuous rise of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the organization will not affect their operations.

“The number of infected is almost one percent of the strength of the PNP but this will not affect our determination to do our job. We will not stop and we will continue to be determined to do our job in protecting the people both from criminal elements and the coronavirus,” said Lt. Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar, PNP deputy chief for Operations.

Eleazar who is also the commander of the Joint Task Force COVID Shield, added recovery is also at a good rate.

Based on the data of the PNP Health Service, a total of 2,249 policemen have been infected by the coronavirus, with 11 deaths recorded. The number of recoveries is already at 1,095.

Most of those who tested positive from the coronavirus were infected while manning border control points and conducting community patrol.

Eleazar said the PNP leadership has been exerting all efforts to provide the needs of policemen in the frontlines, including the issuance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and vitamins.

All that said, Eleazar urged for the cooperation of the public.

“We appeal to the public to cooperate and follow the rules because if not, it would be your frontliners who would also suffer,” he said.

Based on PNP data, a total of 2,230 policemen are suspected to be infected by the virus while 850 are classified as probable COVID-19 cases.
