The Philippine National Police (PNP) will be deploying nearly 78,000 of its personnel to the tourist spots and other usual places of convergence not only for the Lenten break but also for the rest of the “summer” break.
PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin, Jr. said a total of 38,387 policemen will tasked to conduct beat patrols while a total of 39,504 cops will be deployed to specific areas of convergence such as major thoroughfares, transportation hubs, terminals, commercial areas, and places of worship.
He said the deployment of policemen is part of the security measures for the Holy and the Holy Month of Ramadan that began last March 23 and will culminate on April 22.
“The PNP National Headquarters has issued operational guidelines for Police Regional and Provincial Offices to implement their respective law enforcement and public safety plan for the 60-day summer holiday season,” said Azurin.
“We are expecting a large number of travelers during this entire period, and we want to make sure that they will have a safe and enjoyable experience,” he added.
The long Lenten break will start on April 6 and ends on April 10 after President Marcos moved the supposed April 9 Araw ng Kagitingan break to April 10 as part of his Holiday economics—which is intended to maximize the promotion of local tourism.
Aside from Holy Week and Ramadan next month, fiesta and other religious festivities are usually celebrated in May.
The Philippines has only two weather seasons-- tag-ulan or rainy season (June to November) and tag-init or dry season (December to May) but the months of April and May are generally referred to as summer.
Azurin said Assistance Hubs and Police Assistance Desks (PADs) will also be set up in strategic areas to promptly address specific complaints.
“We call on the public to cooperate with us and follow the rules and regulations set by the government to deter the occurrence of crime, prevent accidents and avoid unnecessary inconvenience,” said Azurin.
