A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Ilocos Norte on Tuesday afternoon, March 28, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the quake struck 35 kilometers southwest of Burgos, Ilocos Norte around 1:51 p.m.

The tremor was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Pagudpud, Bangui, Sarrat, San Nicolas, Pasuquin, Bacarra, Laoag City, Carasi, Burgos, and Batac City in Ilocos Norte.

It was also felt at Intensity III (weak) in Paoay, Ilocos Norte.

Meanwhile, it was “slightly felt” at Intensity II in Pinili and Marcos in Ilocos Norte and “scarcely perceptible” at Intensity I in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

It noted that the earthquake may not have caused damage to houses, buildings, and other infrastructure, but advised the public to remain vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
